Participating in the Teaching Strike: a Tri-Level Approach

Members should choose the highest level at which they feel able to participate.

Level 1 - participation within the class

  • The lecture/tutorial/class proceeds, but with a framework that makes reference to the industrial action

  • An AUS colleague is invited to Lecture Speak (5mins) about industrial action

  • Examples:
  • OHPs that give background to industrial action (see the AUS website for examples)

  • question and answer with students

  • a verbal outline of your perspective on the campaign.

  • Members may combine level 1 with level 2 within the same course

Level 2 - disruption and diversion within the class

  • A more detailed focus on industrial action than within level one

  • Examples:
  • a moderated debate on the pros and cons (AUS media releases versus student letters to Canta)

  • alternative texts or activities connected with industrial action

  • afternoon tea with strike discussion (for small classes)

  • an AUS colleague(s) invited to present the case to the class

  • These activities would work well with smaller or more advanced classes

Level 3 - Teaching Strike

  • Labour withdrawn, students dismissed.

  • Handouts or other material on industrial action available.

  • This can be combined with level 2 or level 1 activities within the same course.
