Easter Trading

From NZCTU:

Hi all,

As you know there have been two members’ bills before parliament aimed at liberalising Easter trading. Last week during members day in parliament, Jacqui Dean’s bill was voted down 84 to 37. Steve Chadwick’s bill is still before Parliament, and is due to come up for debate again next week. The CTU supports the NDU stance on in opposing both bills.

Chadwick’s bill would allow local authorities to determine whether shops can open on Easter Sunday, provided they consult their communities by using the procedure provided for in the Local Government Act. After Parliament voted down the Dean bill, Parliament started the second reading on the Chadwick bill last Wednesday. Debate was interrupted, and it is second up on the order paper for next members day, Wednesday May 16th, (and will be debated after the third reading of the child discipline bill).

We are asking you to support the NDU campaign in the next two weeks by encouraging action on the two points below:

Email MPs. MPs can be emailed about Easter trading here: http://www.shelfrespect.org/eastertrading

Circulate the petition sheet. Attached is the NDU’s Easter trading petition sheet, addressed to Mark Gosche MP. Please circulate this widely but note that this should be returned to Mark Gosche by the 15th May.

Thanks,

Carol
